This series contains photographs that document the Army Air Force 41st Service Group in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, and France during World War II. The images largely document the 41st Service Group personnel repairing military airplanes and airplane parts in a variety of settings, mostly at airfields. The images also show various aspects of other day-to-day activities of the service group, such as medical care, communications, loading and unloading supplies and equipment, and recreation. Of particular note are images of entertainers Bob Hope, Jack Benny, and Frances Langford. There are also images of visits by military officers including Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and George S. Patton. Other officers include Colonel Llewellyn Charles Howell, the commanding officer of the 41st Service Group, and General Mark W. Clark, the commanding officer of the Fifth Army which played a major role in the Italian campaign from 1943 to 1945. There is also a folder of captions that tell a story based on the images. Both the photographs and the captions were originally housed in a photograph album compiled by Colonel Howell. Photographers include Reed McCaskey, W.P. Burke, Eldred M. Stephenson, William M. McMorrow, Jr., Leon J. Jablonski, James P. Dougherty, Charles E. Morgan, Oliver Porter, and Harry Dietch. The bound history contains a detailed description of the 41st Service Group's role in World War II, portraits of many of the 41st Service Group military personnel, and also reproductions of some of the photographs previously described in this series.
